There were 12 bottles of The Macallan Peter Blake 1926 60 Year Old released / ©Maccallan The Macallan Lalique Six Pillars Collection – $993,000 Despite The Macallan Red Collection being made available to purchase in extremely limited numbers, this particular series differs from the standard release thanks to its exclusive labels, illustrated and signed by Spanish artist Javi Anarez, with only two sets in existence. The collection features six highly aged Macallan whiskies, including two of the oldest ever released by the distillery – a 74 Year Old and a 78 Year Old. The result was a winning bid nearly four times higher at £756,400 ($975,756), with the proceeds going to the food charity City Harvest London. Bids soon started arriving from all corners of the globe as collectors competed to own the only set of its kind to be made available for sale. When The Macallan Red Collection went up for auction at Sotheby’s in London in November 2020, the rare set of six whiskies had, what in hindsight seems to be, an extremely modest presale estimate of £200,000 ($259,000). The Macallan Red Collection was gifted on behalf of the company to raise funds for charity / ©Sotheby’s Not only does the Speyside distillery take all but three spaces on our list of nine, four of the six Macallan lots featured are actually from the same cask: the legendary #263, which auction house Sotheby’s has described as the “holy grail” of whisky. In fact, just one other Scotch whisky brand comes close. However, on pure liquid merit alone, it comes as no surprise that The Macallan reigns supreme when it comes to smashing records under the hammer. However, golden eggs aside, there’s no denying that Craft Irish is putting Irish whisky back on the world stage. This is because it could be (quite easily) argued that the Fabergé additions to the set had a big influence on the final sum. Although Craft Irish Whiskey Co.’s Emerald Isle Collection - created in collaboration with legendary jeweler Fabergé -broke records in March 2021 when the hammer hit for $2m, purists may debate its place at the top. However, while Scotland has typically dominated in recent years, the nation’s Celtic neighbor over the sea has seen an impressive resurgence. As a result, it is the whisky of this small nation that makes up the majority of our shortlist of the most expensive whisky ever sold. With eye-watering bids and endless news of broken auction records continuing to dominate the industry’s headlines, it is predominantly Scotch whisky that commands the mightiest price tags. When it comes to the price of rare and collectible whisky, the only way is up.
